Description:
Experience the rich culture of Costa Rica with my tour of the Doka Estate Coffee Plantation and the Sarchí Oxcart Factory. This day trip combines the beauty of the Costa Rican landscape with the fascinating world of coffee and traditional craftsmanship.
Your adventure begins with a convenient pickup from your hotel, followed by a relaxing drive through the picturesque countryside in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. As you travel toward Alajuela Province, about 45 minutes from San José, your guide will share insights about the various sights along the way, including coffee and sugarcane plantations, citrus groves, and vibrant local fruit stands.
Upon reaching the stunning Doka Estate, you’ll have some time to explore the grounds before embarking on a comprehensive coffee tour. Discover the intricate process of coffee production, from seed germination to the harvesting of ripe beans. You’ll learn about the estate’s history, the different coffee varieties, and the traditional cultivation methods that have been passed down through generations.
After your coffee tour, savor a delicious traditional lunch, refueling for the next leg of your journey. A short drive will take you to the charming town of Grecia, famous for its striking church, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, constructed entirely of red pre-fabricated steel plates. This unique structure is surrounded by intriguing urban legends, one of which tells of a mix-up that led to its arrival in Grecia instead of its intended destination.
You’ll have the opportunity to explore the church and stroll around the town’s central park before heading to nearby Sarchí. Known for its vibrant arts and crafts scene, Sarchí is particularly famous for its beautifully crafted oxcarts, a national symbol of Costa Rica. These intricately designed carts were once vital for transporting coffee and goods to markets, and their colorful, hand-painted designs reflect the country’s rich heritage.
The largest oxcart factory, the Joaquín Chaverri Oxcart Factory, established in 1902, is located here and is considered the birthplace of oxcart craftsmanship in Costa Rica. You’ll witness the artistry behind these traditional pieces and learn about their significance in the country’s history and culture.
This tour offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and delicious flavors, making it a memorable experience for anyone visiting Costa Rica.
